Grain Free/DCM

Are Grain Free Diets causing Dilated Cardiomyopathy?

In 2018, the FDA issued a statement about a clustering of dogs developing a type of heart disease called dilated cardiomyopathy, or DCM. The unusual thing about these cases, is that 91% of the dogs that developed this disease were eating Grain Free diets.

I have recommended Grain Free diets for over a decade now. I did this, not because I was worried about grains per se, but because the companies that made Grain Free diets tended to use higher quality ingredients. Read my blog posts below to learn about what led me to believe this.

In my experience, I also felt that animals just did better on Grain Free diets.

At the same time, I was concerned about this recent upswing in DCM cases.

For this reason, I spent the past few months researching this topic and writing the articles below. I present to you my opinions and research on these topic, recent changes in Grain Free diet formulations, and my recommendations for how to decrease your dog's chances of developing DCM without having to add grains into the diet.
